“岁月失语，惟石能言”，砚本为石，其用途为文。尼山砚，作为中国名砚之一，因其石产于曲阜尼山而得名，它于尼山石之上，镌刻了一份属于儒学的独家记忆。

　　尼山砚，为鲁砚中的佼佼者，其历史悠久，石质精良，有着“简朴大方、巧夺天工”的艺术风格。砚石产自石灰岩夹层之中，数量稀少，不易开采，其纹理细腻多样，除传统的褐黑色松花纹理外，又有水纹和山水画纹理。在实际制作中因材施艺，依形开墨堂、墨池，少有雕琢点缀，加之铭文多选自《论语》，天然名石与中国传统儒家文化相互辉映，意蕴深长，气质典雅大方。2009年，曲阜尼山砚制作技艺被列入山东省第二批省级非物质文化遗产名录。

　　从尼山石到尼山砚，需要经过选石、相石、设计、雕刻、磨光、刻砚铭等步骤，传统产品有：松花砚、葫芦砚、竹节砚等，以及各种规格的旅游小砚。由于其与生俱来的儒家风韵，在历史上，尼山砚或当贡品进献朝廷，或作礼品馈赠达官显贵。而新中国成立后，在八九十年代，尼山砚多次远赴日本、韩国、新加坡等地展出，好评如潮。尼山砚向国家和有关部门及历届“国际孔子文化节”、“国际儒学学术讨论会”提供了大量的礼品，深受中外专家学者的珍爱。尼山砚作为儒家文化的一种载体，越来越彰显出其巨大的历史价值、文化价值、艺术价值和社会价值。
