Sixty years ago, on October 16th, China's first atomic bomb successfully detonated in Lop Nur, Xinjiang, a thunderous roar from the East that shocked the entire world. On that day, it was also the 51st birthday of nuclear physicist Qian Sanqiang.
The legendary life of "From Ox(Newton)to Love(Einstein)"
Qian Sanqiang was born on October 16, 1913, in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, into a family of scholars, with his father being the first generation of master of Chinese culture, Qian Xuantong. In 1932, Qian Sanqiang was admitted into the Physics Department of Tsinghua University. Qian Xuantong specially wrote "From Ox(Newton)to Love(Einstein)", hoping that Qian Sanqiang would carry forward the "ox spirit" of his zodiac sign, moving towards the direction of Newton and Einstein. This also became Qian Sanqiang's motto: "Put in the ox's strength" to study hard and become the "pioneering ox" of the atomic energy cause.
"Although science has no borders, scientists have a homeland"
In 1937, Qian Sanqiang went to study in France, under the guidance of Marie Curie's daughter, Irène Joliot-Curie. After arriving in Paris, he spent almost every day in the laboratory and became a research instructor at the French National Center for Scientific Research at the age of 34. At the peak of his personal career development, Qian Sanqiang made the decision to return to China, saying, "Although science has no borders, scientists have their own homeland".
Declined the title of "Father of China's Atomic Bomb": Accomplished by a collective effort
After returning to China, Qian Sanqiang presided over the establishment of the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a group of accomplished atomic energy scientists with lofty ideas such as Deng Jiaxian and Peng Huanwu were also invited. Under difficult conditions, they started from scratch, and Qian Sanqiang vividly compared it to "starting from planting wheat when eating bread". After the successful detonation of China's first atomic bomb, Qian Sanqiang was called the "Father of China's Atomic Bomb" by the Western media, but he did not accept this statement, "In fact, it is something done by a collective effort, and it is impossible without cooperation".
In 1992, Qian Sanqiang passed away at the age of 79. In 1999, he was posthumously awarded the "Two Bombs and One Satellite" Achievement Medal. In a letter, Qian Sanqiang once wrote, "Bright China, let my life burn for you". This sentence has traversed the long river of time and illuminated us today.
