The third annual session of China's top advisory body, the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), is set to begin in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing at 3 p.m.Thursday.
Jia Qinglin, chairman of the 10th CPPCC National Committee, will deliver a report on the work of the National Committee's Standing Committee over the past year at the opening meeting.
The 2,000-strong advisors will also hear a report on how their proposals and suggestions regarding China's reform and development were handled since their last full meeting in March 2004.
Founded in 1949, the CPPCC consists of elite members of the Chinese society who are willing to serve as the think tank for the government and for the country's legislative and judicial organs. As an open forum where the ruling Communist Party, the eight non-Communist parties of China and people with no party affiliations discuss state affairs freely and on an equal footing, the CPPCC is also regarded as a perfect interpretation of China's "socialist democracy".
